Gegssend's lair kept time with a sound like rain that had forgotten how to fall. In the corner, a thin chain ticked inside a glass jar. On his bench lay a sieve made from a lantern frame and a wire mesh that sang when it was clean. He was oiling the handles of a small, plain knife when the markings on his chassis began to pulse,slow, fast, fast, slow. The rhythm you hear in an empty house when the refrigerator talks to itself.

He stilled his hands. The pulse went through the room and came back with a taste: smoke, cinnamon, cut pumpkin, and something sweet pretending to be kind.

A night asking to be answered, he thought.

He slid the sieve and the knives into a cloth roll. He tucked in three candles, a coil of chalk-white cord, and a pencil that always wrote the truth even when he wished it wouldn't. He reached for his horn,polished metal, hollow enough to become a door when twisted right.

"Back before dawn," he told the room. The chain in the jar ticked once, as if it understood. He twisted the horn.

The rift opened with the ease of a well-used hinge. Air came through smelling like October and old paper. Gegssend stepped, and the lair folded itself shut behind him with a soft click, the way a book does when the story promises to wait.

The town called itself Hollow. It wore the name in banners strung across a cobbled lane and on a hand-painted sign stuck into a straw bale: WELCOME TO HOLLOW. ALL-HOLLOWS,WARM THE WAY FOR THE KIND DEAD & KEEP THE GREEDY LOST.

Pumpkins lined fences and windowsills. Each face was perfect: identical eyes, identical smiles, a precision that made your own mouth feel like it was wearing the wrong size. Children in masks flowed past, laughter trailing like long threads. A fox, a skeleton, two witches sharing a shawl. None of them looked straight at Gegssend, but the air around him remembered him and made room.

Mel stood where three streets met. She kept both hands in her coat pockets as if to keep her shapes her own. Sight had changed her; it had not made her unkind.

"It chews edges tonight," she said quietly, not looking at the pumpkins. "If you're not careful, it eats the corners first."

"What did you call me for?" Gegssend asked, although he already knew. The pulse on his chassis answered for her,slow, fast, fast, slow.

"The well," Mel said. "It learned how to talk like people we miss."

They walked. The moon had come down too close. It hung low, fat, and interested, the way a neighbor leans on a fence when there's something to see. Shadows didn't lie neatly under things. They gathered in seams and watched.

The well sat at the edge of town, where the picket fences paused for a field. A scarecrow with a pumpkin head stood crooked in the stubble. Its grin was too wide for a vegetable. A rope circled the well; a sign on the rope said NO in careful paint, each letter repainted until it trembled.

"Tim," someone whispered.

The fox‑masked child had come up beside them without sound. He held a wooden train so tight the chimney dug crescents into his palm. He didn't look down the well. He looked at the rope like a dog looks at a leash it knows too well.

"My dad's in there," he said. "He told me the stairs are easy now. He said it's warm."

Mel's mouth changed shape. Not pity,calculation, and pity inside it. "Ask it something small," she murmured to Gegssend. "Something useless unless it's real."

Gegssend set his hand on the cold stone ring. The mortar had been cut with looping marks, not weather, not chisel,fresh scratches that made molars itch. He leaned over, not close enough to fall, and asked, "What did your hands smell like in winter?"

The voice that rose was soft as kitchen light through steam. It had the word Tim right, and that was wrong.

"Soap," it said. "Woodsmoke. The bread is warm. Come down."

The scarecrow's pumpkin brightened,red under orange, a color too interested in blood. The voice smoothed out, as if it had been corrected by someone who didn't like the shape of people.

"It's learned our words," Gegssend said, straightening. "Not our people."

Tim's fingers loosened on the train. He didn't cry. He did not step forward.

"We fix the ritual," Mel said. She looked at the pumpkins then, and her face was sharp the way a needle is sharp when it's about to do something necessary. "No more matching faces."

Gegssend unrolled his bundle on the stones. The knives were small and plain, handles oiled and honest. The sieve lay beside them, wire mesh taut, the lantern frame braced to hold truth and pulp both. He set out a box of stubby candles, a flint, and a coil of cord that didn't burn quickly.

"These knives squeal if you force a lie," he said. "Let your hands remember."

They went door to door with Mel's voice like a bell struck softly but heard across a field. "Bring your pumpkins. Bring your memory. No perfect faces."

The town came, guilty and hopeful and cold in their coats. They sat in a ring around the well, a circle of knees and breath and candle glass. The moon leaned closer. The scarecrow watched and didn't blink.

The elder arrived last. He carried a thin book with a brown cover veined in moving red, like veins deciding to be seen. He didn't meet Gegssend's eye. "The pattern," he said, small. "It made the voices louder."

"Louder isn't truer," Mel said. "Sit."

They began.

Some hands shook. Some didn't. They carved not triangles but the stubborn curl that never stayed down. A chipped tooth. A mouth that pulled to one side when thinking. A scar below the lip where the winter ice had kissed too hard. A lazy eyelid. A freckle that migrated when you smiled. They carved how kindness sounds when it is busy, how anger sounds when it apologizes badly and then does the dishes anyway.

Every time a pumpkin face finished, Gegssend took it into his lap and worked the sieve through the strings and seeds. The mesh caught pulp and something that was not exactly pulp,soft loops that felt like listening that had gone wrong. He cleaned the mesh with a cloth until it sang.

Tim sat with a pumpkin on his knees. He carved a mouth trying not to laugh. He carved an eyebrow that got lost in the middle. When he was done, he lit the candle inside and said, clear, "He burned the bread every winter. I watched the pan."

The well shifted, a small sound like a chair moving two rooms away.

Others followed. "She saved buttons." "He folded paper boats and never said where they went." "She hated the smell of pears but ate them anyway because they were cheap." "He was quiet until the story reached cats, and then he talked too much."

With each small truth, the scratches on the mortar felt less like a language and more like something rain would remove when it remembered how. The voice in the well thinned,the smoothness cracked, the kitchen-light tone frayed into something human and then faded.

At last, a voice rose that wasn't trying to be anyone. It wore the shape of a scarf warmed on a radiator.

"I am gone," it said. "Watch the edge."

Tim nodded without moving. He put his train on the stone, a peace offering to gravity, and then he picked it up again because it was his.

The elder's hands trembled. He extended the thin book to Gegssend, red veins twitching like a breath held too long. "I taught them the matching faces," he said. "I thought the dead needed... order."

Gegssend wrapped the book in the cloth he'd used to clean the sieve. The moving red calmed, as if it preferred darkness to being seen. He didn't promise anything. He only said, "No more louder."

"How do we end?" someone asked from the back, the voice that always asks practical things when magic makes people quiet.

"Bread," Mel said. "Eat what someone else brought. That's how you tell a hungry thing it doesn't live here."

They set a long table down the lane. Loaves, stews, apples with the bloom still on, cookies shaped like leaves, a pie that collapsed and tasted better for it. No one ate what they'd carried in. Hands met unfamiliar plates. Names were said softly and correctly. Chairs were set with their backs to the well on purpose. The pumpkins flickered in their imperfect ring, faces watching the center without wishing.

Near midnight, the candles burned low. The scarecrow's grin loosened a tooth, then another, until it looked like someone who'd fallen asleep in a good chair and didn't mind being seen that way. The moon eased back toward its proper place; watching from a distance is still watching.

One last pumpkin burned too long in the window of an empty house. Gegssend walked over, felt that it was warm where hands had been, and blew it out.

"I'm going home now," he told the quiet room. The room did not answer, which was right.

Tim slept at the table with the fox mask in his lap. His wooden train had crumbs in the wheels, as if it had traveled through a kitchen.

When the last candle guttered and the well was only a circle of cold stones, Gegssend wrapped the knives, shook the mesh clean until it sang a small, satisfied note, and lifted the cloth with the book inside.

They walked back the way they had come. At the corner, Mel touched his metal arm. "You didn't blast it," she said. In her voice was relief disguised as a joke. "I'm proud of you."

"I brought a sieve," he said.

"That's what I mean."

He twisted his horn. The rift opened like a careful breath taken in a quiet room. He stepped through. The air of his lair closed around him, oil, metal, the old dust that settles on the high shelves of a life.

Gegssend set the wrapped book on a high ledge where things go when they need time to stop wanting. He washed the sieve under a thin trickle until the water ran clear. He dried the knives and oiled the handles again. He wrote a label in his metallic, square hand and stuck it beneath the sieve on the shelf: HARVEST OF REMEMBRANCE, HOLLOW v1.

On his bench lay a single candle he had not made. Just wax and wick, stubborn and small. He lit it with a match that smelled like sulfur and mornings. It did not warm the room. It told him where to sit.

He sat.

Outside, in a town that had learned the use of corners again, a scarecrow discovered there are better smiles than wide ones. A boy slept with his mask off and his face looking like itself. The well held quiet like a bowl holds water when you've remembered not to crack it. The pumpkins went out one by one, imperfect faces settling to ash. And the moon watched from the sky instead of the ground, which is where it belongs when you want people to sleep.
