The curse of the Watched was not the only ill to plague the kingdom. The realm had prospered and kept growing, and the days of turmoil seemed to have been left behind. However, though these good times endured, a new ailment took the royals by surprise.

The first to contract this new curse was a prince, one who held one of the highest ranks in the court and who had led many battles. It was precisely during one of these raids that it happened. In the middle of fighting, as he stabbed a sword through an enemy, he tried to call out to one of the Night Watchers for backup, but he found he could not speak. He tried to cry out again, but the sound never came. This cost him some injuries, as he could not ask for anyone to aid him, and the others were not paying attention in the frenzy of war. In the end, the battle was won, but his voice seemed lost for good.

The Eye Lord in charge of the army contacted the king, asking for his guidance, but the ruler of the kingdom had no answers. This plague befell the royals, they were not blinded like the Watched. Instead, they were turned into mutes.

The prince that first contracted it went back to the court defeated, despite their victory against their rivals, and he was discharged from leading the armies, for he could not give orders any more. Feeling useless, he spent a lot of time consulting the Demon to check those sacred pages of history, as well as the royal library, which held all the knowledge of science, medicine and light the kingdom had to offer, looking for a cure to this sickness.

It was not long before a second royal went quiet too. A princess who lost her voice in the middle of a feast. One by one, many royals fell silent. The king banished them, fearful of contagion, to an island far from the sky where he and the rest of the royals lived, but this was not enough to stop the curse from spreading.

The king grew paranoid that he or the queen might fall prey to this plague. How would he rule if he could not speak? And so he also declared that this would be kept secret from the rest of the kingdom.

The royals whispered and speculated about the origins of this curse. They thought it might be a hex placed upon them by the Watched, who might still be spiteful for the king not aiding them when they were blinded; after all, all things must fall by their own weight, and maybe this was some kind of retribution.

Once a large portion of his court had lost their voices, the king became desperate, so he searched for an answer based on these speculations. He scoured for a Watched that was wise and could have an answer as to how the curse might be cured.

The Watched he chose was old and frail but, despite his weakness, the king was surprised to find he was as clever as the best in his court. He suggested the curse might have originated not from an earthly hex cast by the Watched but rather something deeper, something that came from beyond; this might be divine punishment.

The king decided then that the solution might be to pay tribute to the Watched in some way. The royals had, after all, come from them. So he spoke to them and, with his power over light, blessed them with a new ability - the power to go unseen when they wished and to show themselves at will. Some chronicles held that the Watched had already learned the same gift under the blindness curse - the king's light, they said, named what survival had already taught.

After this blessing, the curse stopped, though the royals who had fallen silent did not recover their voice. They learned from the Watched. The ones willing to teach them their ways and how to speak with their minds rather than their voices. The kingdom never knew whether this was the work of the Watched or some divine entity. The Watched were respected by the king for their aid.
